Grappling Hook

I just got 19 topaz from one vein is it worth it to make a grappling hook? (I don't know what else gems are for).

You can make an iron one if you find a hook from piranas or skeletons, but a gem one is better I think (could be wrong) and you will most likely find a better one later game, but that's going to be after hardmode happens.

Gems are used to make colored torches, staffs for magic early on, a couple of swords, stained glass/blocks and a few other minor things. They're semi-rare but not super useful unless you want them for a building project really.

okay thanks and they are semi rare but i only need one hook and 15 gems isn't that bad on a large world.

no dont make a grappling hook first if u happen to have meteorite in ur inventory you can use the meteore and a specific gem to make a phaseblade. they are awesome

Trust me. Grapplings hooks are a must have.

I know i'vee used them... and phaseblades only require one gem so if I can't get atleast 16 of each kind of gem I suck at the game.... also I am one emerald from having the enough to make an emerald grappling hook which is better than the topaz.... what's an easy way to find emeralds?

Gems have quite a few uses, actually. The wiki page has a list of all their various uses:

If there's nothing else you can do with them at the moment, though, I'd say go ahead and make a grappling hook, since grappling hooks really are extremely useful. Gems really aren't all that rare, so you can always get more later.

For the most part though they are for decorations and I would rather have a grappling hook lol

The staffs you can make with them are pretty good for early game, and if you're planning on playing a mage class the gem robes are a good investment, too. But other than that, yeah, grappling hooks are probably the most useful thing to you at the moment.

Also, a good way to get lots of gems is to collect silt and slush and then, when you find an Extractinator (rare item in underground chests), dump it all in there. If you have enough silt/slush, you should get a pretty good amount of gems, alongside ores and money.

Some grappling hooks are worse than the stock one, and some of the gem ones are better. Diamond specfically.

Rare drop from skeles and pirahnnas. Doesn't take much cave spelunking to get one after a while.

take this into consideration you need10 gemstones to make a phaseblade plus 20 meteorite bars so now you know :P
