Underground bases, good or bad?

I am rather new to Terraria, having it a few months but not playing it much but thinking of trying again. My friends that have many hours in it say its bad to build houses underground because of corruption, yet I see man people in screenshots section with underground bases. Can I still make my base underground? I like bases like that

It's a bit harder to build underground bases. There are more monsters. I wouldnt say curruption.
It's challenging and doesn't offer many resources ( wood, slimes, etc.). Making bases on the surface is safer ( except in the blood moon)

All you need to have for a Npc House Is. Atleast 4block height and i think it is 7block length (Inside the rooms) So that whould be a 6x8 House with walls. With a Table with chair and a Lightsource

You won't have to worry about Corruption/Crimson until Hardmode, and even then, there are ways to stop the spread. So make your base however you want.

Does making it underground encourage NPC's to move in?

Yes you only need to make the house Suitable, Aka a Table with Chair, Walls and a Lightsource
