Building a new house vs. makeover of the old one
Hey guys,

I want to know how you handeled your housing situation.
My first house was constructed under a kind of "oh ♥♥♥♥, night is coming, build something!!!"-situation. Of course I added (a lot of) further floors and its crowded with NPC´s by now.
But actually I really don´t like it anymore. The place isn´t good, the floors are not really matching and it just doesn´t look nice. I want a concept now.

I´ve seen some of you made incredibly awesome places and now I want to know: Did you kind of tear down your old place and rebuild it or did you start over at another place of the map? Or did you start a new map and sneaked your stuff over from the old housing?
Also what happends to the NPCs if I tear down the house? Can I make them move in the new one or can I leave them in the old place and visit if I need to buy something?

I´d appreciate your opinion very much! Thanks! =)

Myself, when its a new world and new character, i start basic. Once you are at a point in which you want to make some improvements, go for it!. The npcs can be moved around using the housing options (open your inventory and click on the house icon by the swords/ party icons. This will allow you to relocate npcs and check to see if the area is sutiable for housing). Other then that, your imagination is your limitation (within the scope of the game of course).

once i had a bunch of experience i destroyed my basic house and made a new one on a cloud that was nearby, and its awesome.

im at that point myself i just keep remodling but the world is so messed up now from corruptions and stuff and i cant decide to start a new world on a small map just to make nice stuff on easy mode or stick with this one and make a diff place or to find a ways to make the one i have bigger for more stuff or what. its kind of frusterating. lol

I'm what I think of as a "semi-cheater". I don't hack the game or anything, but once I earn something legitimately I will bring that with me into a new world if I want, to begin a new base. Mostly I bring along fancy building materials that are hard to collect in a new world, with beginner pickaxe and armor. I've always found that starting a new world this way and fast-forwarding to the level I left the old world at makes sense because as you play you naturally learn what works well and what doesn't, and new housing ideas occur to you, and deconstructing an old house can be more trouble than it's worth.

Most of the fun I have in the game involves testing out new base or fortress ideas, new design challenges, new materials, etc. Also, it's fun to find out what the differences are when dealing with a small vs. large world, or hilly vs. flat, or one with purity well-protected by snow and other buffers vs. spawning quite near corruption. Figuring out how to meet these challenges is my favorite thing!
Thank you all very much for your answers!
As I feared there isn´t THE solution.
I´m also worried that deconstruction might take longer than building something new and also I´ve started with a small map and I´ve already discovered quite a lot of it.
Maybe I´ll look for a cloud first (that sounded like a nice idea) and will then restart at another map.
I see it coming: I´ll probably just wait untill I have to build more defenses and will switch to a new map because I´m too lazy for hard mode :D

if you build ona cloud dont build it too high up or your npc's will get massacred by the wyvrens that spawn high up, you can always "move the cloud" by deconstructing it and then putting it back together
Had to look these things up... yeah... maybe I should really look for a very low cloud then :D
Thanks again for the tip!

You can build in the same world. Just make your new house/apartment with all the materials you have gathered (that is also another reason that you don't need to make such a fancy one at the beginning, since you may not have all the materials you want yet).

After you're done or after getting a few rooms, just put a bed and reassign the rooms to the NPCs that you need there as being critical NPCs. Then keep adding as needed.

I would still leave the other house instead of tearing it down. It can still be used as storage or as a secondary base. For example, in my case, I have several backup bases all over the world map to do different things, and they all need the basic room/bed/chests setup anyway.
