Why does my Travelling Merchant keep spawning in the lava?!
I have a trap outside my base that I use during bloodmoons/eclipses/invasions, and nearly every time he spawns, they decide to place him directly on top of the lava instead of ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE SCREEN, and he dies before I can even mirror two him. What the hell.

That's a pain because
1. literally nobody else falls in
2. more work
3. rushing to hit the switch during an event
4. remembering to flip it on again afterward.

and it still doesn't explain why the game spawns npcs in lava when 90% of the screen is perfeclty safe. I even put those stairs on the right to prevent other stuff from falling in. Do I need stairs on the left too?

maybe because thats his spawn point -....- you can't change the spawn point, if he spawn there for the first time he will spawn there for the rest of the game when he died

That's not true because sometimes he spawns up by my crafting stations, and I've even seen him spawn an entire screen away. In other worlds, he can spawn anywhere nearby a House, even if said house is way across the world.

true, BUT: POINTS FOR STYLE.

beside that: basically what you said yourself. he spawns somewhere close to any NPC living in any housing. so, if you have a lava lake right next to your settlement............ the game is really not doing the thinking for you here. but it's not asking for too much either.

one elegant solution would be: jump back to answer #1. really, it doesnt take that long. plus, its cool to have 5 ugly zombies walking on the floor and let them drop into the lava all at once with one click. but thats a matter of taste.

i'm agreed with "...its cool to have 5 ugly zombies walking on the floor and let them drop into the lava all at once with one click...." and i'm gonna doing it know :steamhappy:

Style=/=efficiency. Not only is it more work, but if five zombies (or other enemies) are just wandering around, more can't spawn. I want them to die faster. In fact, I should be putting dart traps in with my lava too.

I could use wooden platforms instead, but I'd rather not risk them jumping out or chasing me if I leave my Safe Room.

Also, pressure plates could save me a little work, but there are none that are triggered by mobs and NOT npcs. And the only items I still need from the TM are the Gatligator and pulse bow, which become outclassed later anyway, the ammo box, and possibly the celestial magnet.

Nothing can spawn on lava he probably just spawns next to it and walk right in, you should just cover the holes with actuated blocks and only open them up when you have a blood moon or whatever. Seriously it's not much work you already spent more time making and replying to this thread than it would have taken to build.
Travelling merchant spawns different to the other npcs, he always spawns to the side then walks towards your base I think, while normal town npcs will spawn directly in valid houses.
If you aren't prepared to spend 5 minutes making your place safe for the travelling merchant stop complaining because it's your own fault.

People already mentioned this. But he''s a travelling merchant so he will walk a lot. And he usualyl falls down into holes of different kinds. he tends to walk right into my fishing pond and drown to death for example. Either hope that he spawns on another location that prevents him from passing that point ot make some easurments to prevent it from happening.
Either way, it's stupid for the game to not account for that. And that's no fault of mine, that's the programmers.

I guess if he does literally fall from the sky, I could make a sort of skybridge where the enemies can't reach, just big enough to catch him...

Enemies will spawn on the skybridge too and it is your fault for digging holes in the ground and putting lava in them :steamfacepalm:

anyway, batabii i am (obviously) extremely bored, so if you want i will build that switch floor for you in 2 minutes out of meteorite bricks with cheesy matching colors, its really not rocket science.
I told you that's beside the point. It's the principle of the thing.

And if you really want to see my base, I already posted it in the top of the thread.
