Why does Redigit make all the updates for FREE?
I don't know if they gave some information about this but it seems really odd to me that they add such a massive amount of content realtively frequently and want nothing in return.

They could have made it like really cheap...say $2 for 1.2 and another 2 for 1.3, bunch of people would buy it and the devs would make a lot more money which, in return, would mean they could use them to make even MORE content.

It's not like anyone would accuse them of DLC whoring since the updates are just so massive and improve the game so much.
I'd like to get other people's insight on this.

I'd definitely buy expansions to support them because they know what they're doing and keep at it, but I think a donation site would probably work a lot better.

Some people would be left out because they might not be able to join worlds that are 1.3 and they couldn't buy it and you know some people wouldn't go for it, there are so many people in the trading forum begging for this game and it doesn't even cost that much.
I believe the community of this game is not enough mature to provide paid dlc, this will be the OMG DONT BUY fest...

Having been on these forums for quite some time, I can definitely see your point x) The voluntary donation thing wouldn't be a terrible idea though.

Or they could make 2 versions of the patches. Free and 'premium', they would be compatible with each other for multiplayer purposes and the only difference could be something silly like a unique pet or set of vanity items so that people who want to support the devs further could buy that, get something in return and the community wouldn't split.

The reason they did it was to have long-term players to buy their future games.

Yeah what if they spent it on something else, otherwise this is a stupid suggestion.
Who would pay 2 or 3 bucks just to update the game that's not a good suggestion at all.
Plus if they had the money to update it what about they're friends they usually play with can't update the game,. Then they would'nt be able to play again with each other.

"PC Gamer: Why did you decide to support the game for so long? Why not release DLC or expansions?

Spinks: Making Terraria was always about making a game that I wanted to play. Every time I would think we were done we always found new inspiration to come back and add to the game. Our community has been really good to us and we felt the need to return the favor.

PC Gamer: Did you ever consider charging for extra content?

Spinks: No, not really. As a gamer I have never really been a fan of paid DLC."

Ah I haven't read that article yet, thanks.

No I am not 'bored with all my money'. I usually don't pay when I don't have to and I am very stingy when it comes to purchasing videogames or pretty much anything. I just found it strange that they've supported the game for so long for free. That's it :)

I am waiting patiently for Terraria: Otherworld.

I would also like to see an isometric terraria one day.

Expansions that add completely new things can be charged sure, but these are merely "updates". Patches to put in unfinished and/or revamped and fixed content. Since when was buying a partially-completed product once, and then paying for the other parts later that included fixes for the 1st half smart? This is assuming the company doesn't just shut down spontaneously and bail with your money.

See the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls commotion during its advertisement phase, Destiny's "pass" system, AngryJoeReview's video about Asura's Wrath DLC marketed as "the true ending", and Brad from 4PlayerPodcast's video about DLC and standard content (the one with Devil May Cry 3 used as an example). Playing "DLC Quest" is also a humorous, satirical way of looking at this too.

The game has been finished a long time ago. Everything that came after 1.0 could be easily considered an expansion, especially 1.2 and 1.3.

What does that have to do with anything? Do you say that because some people don't have money to buy a house or a car, means that these should be given out for free? No of course not, that's not how things work.

This kind of business practice is actually healthy for the product itself.

The community won't be split with DLCs (like those found in BF or CoD series).

Prolongs the game's age (4 year old game and got to the top 10 on steam stat)

Newcomers will keep coming.

The other devs that I know that have this kind of generosity is Tripwire with Killing Floor 1 (2009 release), Trek Industries (they're actually clearing their name by fixing the game constantly and adding more and more content to the game) also, of course, Valve.

Now that's what I called love to their creations.

Also, releasing source codes for the older games proven to prolong the game's life (see the doom classics).

Hopefully someday Valve release GoldSRC source code too.
