Was there some other bunches of programs secretly taking up all the system memory? Instances where this can happen are the computer applying OS updates, anti-virus programs running scheduled updates/scanning, other programs that are on had memory leaks/hanging, viruses/malicious software eating it up.
The "low memory" might be a false diagnosis from the game too. The game think it's that while it may actually be something else. For example, "Unsuitable graphics card" error can occur if you lock your user account (Windows Key+L) while the game is on, even if you're running a GTX 980 or a Titan.
