Armour Tips for ranger
I'm playing a ranged class in terraria and I was wondering what armour and accessories to use.
I'm in the middle of hard mode.

Most of the early and mid hard-mode armors will work just fine. You just need to be careful which helmet you craft, as the nature of the armor will usually be determined by the helmet. One of the three helmets will give significant 'ranged' bonuses, while the other two will enhance 'meele' or 'magic'. Just read the bonuses of the helmets before deciding which to craft.

Post-plantera, look for making Shroomite armor, as the benefits of that armor are tuned for ranged users. The different helmets in that armor will benefit different types of ranged weapons.

Frost armor is also a really interesting option. It's on par with titanium stats-wise, and a bit lower than adamantite/hallowed, but it adds the frostburn debuff to your attacks, which is great (and gives free light). On top of that, it's the only hybrid armor, giving the same bonuses to melee (which means you can use a sword with your gun/bow if you need to, or use any kind of boomerang)

I always find useful information in the wiki ( http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Terraria_Wiki ), it has a page containing all different amours found in the game: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Armor

If you haven't already, grab adamantite/titanium armour and grab the head piece which benefits ranged. I skipped Hallowed, which you may want to also and then go for shroomite until the lunar events, which you can then grab vortex armour for the end-game ranger.

For accessories, I think an Ankh shield is good for anyone - prevents knockback and a lot of debuffs from occurring but can take some time to farm. The celestial shell also has quite a few useful benefits to most classes, but again needs some rare drops to create. Frostspark boots are the best boots you can grab. I'm not so set on the other slot(s), I usually use a Papyrus scarab which makes my stardust dragon a bit longer and stronger, but you could have a more ranger-orientated accessory. For reforging, I think Warding (+4 defense) is the best, but you could go for some damage increases (either straight +4% damage or +4% crit chance).

I think the cosmic car key is one of the better mounts if you can grab it, decent speed and has unlimited duration.

The following sets of armor have ranged attack bonuses:

Pre-Hardmode:
  • Ninja - drops from King Slime, decent bonuses for thrown weapons.
  • Fossil - made with sturdy fossils (which are extractinated from desert fossils), surprisingly good throwing bonuses, synergizes well with fossil javilins and the bone glove. Can be made as soon as you have a 65% pickaxe or better. (Corrupt/Crimson Pickaxes and the Reaver Shark are the early options.)
  • Crimson - It Goes With Everything! Only availible in worlds with a Crimson biome.
  • Necro - Made from cobwebs and bones, the OG ranger armor.
Hardmode:
  • Hardmode Ore Armor With Appropriate Hat
  • Frost Armor - Made from Adamant/Titanium bars and Frost Golem Cores. Better defense than Adamant/Titanium ranger armor and has a good debuff on all melee/ranged attacks, but doesn't have an ammo conservation bonus or the pure damage of Adamant or Titanium.
  • Hallowed Armor With Appropriate Hat - Worth noting that Titanum ranger armor actually provides more-or-less equivalent damage/protection and a superior armor set bonus, but Titanium armor doesn't have the 25% ammo conservation bonus.
Post-Mechanical Bosses:
  • Chlorophyte Armor With Appropriate Hat - Better numbers than Hallowed Armor on basically everything, shame the set bonus isn't really useful in Expert Mode.
Post-Plantera:
  • Shroomite Armor - Post-Plantera, you need to get a truffle NPC and 1 platinum coin to purchase the autohammer to make Shroomite Bars.
Postgame:
  • Vortex Armor - Postgame Celestial Armor for Rangers.

I usually run melee armor on ranged builds due to their much higher defense and because the armor increases mining speed. If you must run ranged armor, reforge your accessories to be Warding. That's a +20 armor boost (+24 on Expert Hardmode)!
