How do I use the work bench?

I've just started my first game, and I built my first work bench (or three). Every time I stand near it, it just jumps into my inventory and I can't use it to build anything. What am I doing wrong?

You're dropping it, not placing it. Left click it in your inventory then left click it again on the ground somewhere flat.

Thanks. Do I have to set it to one of the 0-9 quickslot items in order to place it?

no u can just click on it in your inventory then place it on a flat area

Only if you have autopause enabled (game will pause when you open your inventory), otherwise you can grab it out of your inventory and place it.
