Yes.

Sometimes NPC's will leave if you find them and don't have valid housing to hold them.

They'll also leave if Corruption/Crimson is close so make sure to keep the Corruption/Crimson away.

It means he died. When the Angler dies, it says he "left" because he's a kid and they don't want kids to die in this game...I think.
