Fishing tips?
I've never actually done any fishing in Terraria aside from killing time at the ocean in 1.2. I just got a quest to fish in a sky island and I'm pretty sure I'll be toting buckets of water up to an island back and fourth.

Anyways, to get back on point, is there an easy way to see how big the pool of liquid is that you're trying to fish in? Also, just any other tips is greatly appreciated.

It only needs to be 300 blocks of water (with a wide enough surface) to eliminate all penalties. Fishing up trash items (like cans and boots) is a sure way to know that it's too small.

One of the rewards from Fishing lets you know what your Fishing Power is, I believe it displays penalties from fishing in pools that are too small. But it's not necessary to have it.

Sonar Potions can help you save bait. As long as you don't try to fish out anything, bait is not consumed, so with this Potion you can simply wait until something that you want is biting and try to fish that one only.

"Quests" aren't really quests at all, the Angler just has a "fish of the day" that is the only quest fish available for catching from 4:30 to 4:30 (24 in-game hours, 24 real life minutes). If a quest is too much of a hassle, you can just see him again the next day for a new one. And of course, once it's past 4:30 AM, the previous day's fish can't be caught anymore so don't lose your time.

The wiki should have all the info you need, really.

Since this patch is still pretty new, I tend to trust other players more than the wiki.

Thanks for the information.

Sky lakes get generated in worlds created after 1.3. They're not super big, but big enough that you can get the daily quest fish after a minute or two.

This is a new Expert world and out of all my sky islands, only one of them has a very small puddle.

Another one of the fishing rewards is an infinite water bucket. You can just dig up a big hole in almost any biome and fill it with water to create an adequate fishing pool. Before you get that, you have to do with whatever water is already on the map (or tons of regular buckets).

There aren't that many quest fish on sky islands. Harpyfish, Fallen Starfish and Wyvernfish, if I remember correctly. Usually you'll be sent to reasonable locations.

Does it matter if my cave system is Corruption and I'm asked to get a bat fish?

I'm guessing it would still work as Corruption is a biome modifier and not a standalone biome, but it's really just a guess. You could try just to know how it works in the future, or not risk it and find another body of water in a pure biome.

Well, I'm not too sure it works since I just spent the entirety of my time limit fishing out failures. Next time I get that quest I'll try a non-corruption/hallow cave and see if that works.

Several of those underground fish actually require a non-Corruption/Crimson/Hallow/Jungle/Mushroom/Desert biome.

You just need 1 water bucket, if you spam the button while the water is dropping in mid air you can get infinite water with one bucket.

each world should spawn with a sky lake
