How to hang a banner?

I must be missing something, cause I am getting these things but can't seem to find a way to put them up. Help please.

you have to put it on a ceiling

They need one solid block to hang on, they don't need a wall, nor do they hang from platforms. And there can't be anything in their way (like infront of them).

They can hang on half platforms (The ones that line up with half blocks)

Yeah it needs to hang under something, such as a block and needs like 2 tiles of space.
