Think of being able to use Purification Powder in a larger area and from a much further distance, not to mention the ability to control the biomes. I say it's well worth the cost and gold is an infinite resource, just gotta farm more.

Depends. Eventually you'll need it to clear out large corrupt/crimson areas just to get certain resources or enemies to spawn. It definitely is worth it though. I've had problems containing the spread of one biome right on top of one of my oceans and the Clentaminator fixes that right up.
