How does the corruption/crimson/hallow spread?
I've been playing this game for awhile now but i still dont know how they spread like does the corruption's vines help the spread? or do any mobs in the Crimson/the Hallow/the Corruption help spread it? i have some questions so i'll put them in a list.

1. Can vines in the Corruption help spread it?

2. Do any mobs in Crimson/the Hallow/the Corruption spread it?

3. Which blocks can be converted to the Crimson/Hallow/Corruption?

4. Which blocks cannot be converted?

5. Which blocks spread the Crimson/Hallow/Corruption?

6. Can the Crimson spread across walls?

7. How many empty blocks are necessary to contain the Crimson/Hallow/Corruption?

If any one can answer my questions that would be great and it would be most appreciated :)

I'll say the stuff I know for sure:

They can only 'jump' 3 blocks away at most, so a 3 block wide gap, and filling it with stuff they cannot convert, stops them from spreading that direction, unless they find a way around the gap.

They can convert: Grass that is on Dirt, Sand, Stone, Ice. Corruption and Crimson can also corrupt Mud by turning it into Dirt, and taking over the grass that would grow on it.

They can NOT convert: Wood, Grassless Dirt, Clay, Cactus, all Ore, all Bars, all Bricks, Snow, all Man-Made/manually created blocks, Sandstone, Fossil... and anything else not mentioned in what can be converted.

They are spread by: Any blocks they have converted. Unsure about vines, best be safe and purify anything that could spread them through vines.

They can NOT spread using Walls, only actual blocks(and possibly vines?).

No enemy should be able to spread any of these. Corruptor, a Hardmode Corruption type enemy, used to be able to spread Corruption through its projectile attack, which it aimed at you, but I believe this was removed.

1: yes
2: only in the crimson, the spitting jerks (unless that was removed as per above? havent tested in the latest)
3: most natural terrain
4: artificial blocks
5: any that have been converted
6: assuming you mean backwall, no, if you mean bricks, it needs to be at least 3 thick
7: 3

7. something like a 3-5 block gap
other things to note
hardmode chages what stops crimson/corruption
and more importantly breaking demon altars for hardmode ores does make a spot of either corruption/crimson or Hallow per destroyed altar somewhere in your world.

1. Vines grow from grass, but vines do not count as a spreading tile, if I recall.
2. Corruptors used to spread Corruption tiles, but that since has been nerfed.
3. Stone, ice and grass can spread crim/corr/hallow
4. Many materials cannot be affected by spread. Ash, clay, obsidian, even planks.
5. Any affected grass, stone, ice can facilitate spread.
6. Background walls made of Stone are affected by spread.
7. Spread can cross over a few tile gap, so a barricade of 4 tiles across can stop it from spreading. It'd also help to build it a bit deep as to block off anny underground spread.

Just confirming that a 3 tile wide space is enough to prevent spread of anything.

The only exception is that the corruption vines can actually grow across gaps sometimes and possibly spread it, so to contain corruption it's usually better to have a wall rather than a hole.

Why not both?

They can spread through the backwall.

can shadow orbs spread it? and also smashed altars are so pissed you smashed em they convert ANY RANDOM block in your whole world to corruption. why? because ♥♥♥♥♥!
they do not spread it themselves though very strangely. but srsly i need to know about shadow orbs spreading it. i cheat the game back by using tshock and removing the v shape and 1 of the two natural corrup[tion biomes. the other one and the hallow i surround with 6 layer thick wood(just to be sure).

sorry this reply is so late wasnt on yesterday, anyway as far as i know shadow orbs/hearts do not spread the corruption/crimson and only summon the bosses after 3 are broken (and give you items but tbh what you get from them is pretty useless)

I will tell you that the Hallow cannot convert mud into dirt. This is good for containing your Jungle from evil

Sorry for not answering any of your questions

thx anyways. but btw musket in early game is really nice just as the magic vine thorn since it hits enemies like 3-5 times before dissapearing. it makes a GREAT tool harvesting meteorite and keeping off the heads since it nearly one shots em (because it hits multiple times) an can hit them while still in the walls

Does Expert mode affect the speed at which they spread, the range, or both?

only speed. relativly to normal mode spread speed is increased massively. i suggest not only surrounding ur current corruption. not only estimate where the V shape will take place to surround it with wood/uncorruptable stuff. but also make some containment comparntments like water compartments on ships. the reason being is that when altars are broken random blocks in ur world will be converted. i tried Tshock worldedit and use it every now and then to keep corruption at bay. however sadly enough on larger scales it doesnt work that well and it keeps missing certain spots i have yet to find
