I would say that yo-yos are very useful early to mid game but they aren't my go to weapon.
Swords are still good for general purpose, particularly with groups and when being attacked from multiple directions, or where knockback is needed, but until you get to where you can get to the mid-late hardmode swords, yoyos can do better focused damage on singular targets.
I agree. It's very easy with some farming to progressively get the next best yo-yo in hardmode. It is an amazing weapon but it's almost the weapon you use UNTIL you find that end game sword/spell/gun/whatever.
