Advice on Fishing
Yet to really bother with Fishing yet.
My main concerns are as follows:
  1. Is Fishing really worth it? Is there anything specific of high value I can get out of Fishing, or is it all just Alchemy Stuff?
  2. Which Fishing Rod should I try for? I've sorta been saving up to try to get a High Tier Fishing Rod (Sitting Duck Rod... Ech 35 Gold) (I am at the point where I should probably be trying for Hellstone)
Also another thing I'd like to ask is why a Metorite hasn't landed on my world yet. I've cracked about 6 Shadow Orbs...

Imho it's worth, there's a lot of exclusive stuff that you can get only by fishing.
Yesterday i got a Zephyr Fish Pet which is very rare, Tsunami in a bottle, there are some usable fishes too in the oceans.
And more stuff.

I've been fishing like a madman since the achievements became a thing, and let me tell you I was missing out. I wasn't into potions until I became a tank for some friends, and fishing is absolutely needed for some of the better potions.

For example-
~Expert mode pretty much requires that you get potions when facing bosses higher than Mech
~Cell Phone end game item requires fishing-related rewards
~Sundial item is a fishing-only item. It fast-forwards the day until morning the next day once a week. This is pretty helpful for resetting the fishing quest and resetting the daily spawns (meteorite being one of them)
~Certain biomes will drop crates for their area sometimes containing items exclusive to that biome. This means if you didn't get the Cobalt Shield from the dungeon, you can fish for the Dungeon Crate and get it with some luck.

Personally I see it as a long-term investment that pays out once you get to end game. Here's how I started: Wait to fish until you can beat Eye of Cthulu easily. Make yourself a rod from his drops (the Fisher of Souls or Fleshcatcher) and start gathering fireflies at night using platforms near your house (wings work too). If the Traveling merchant has his fishing pole for sale, get it if possible. Otherwise hold out until you complete 30 fishing quests and get the Golden rod (best rod, is rewarded on the 30th quest turn in guarenteed). I'm having a lot of fun fishing and hopefully this will convince you to try it out yourself :)

TL:dr
Yes, fishing is worth it but the rewards aren't immediate. Make a Crimtane/Demonite fishing rod to start. The world will randomly spawn meteorite at the start of each day, it's all Rng.

A lot of pre-hardmode stuff worth having, has an equivalent item awarded through fishing (or can simply be obtained by fishing). For example, you might get the Sailfish Boots from a fished-up wooden crate, saving you the trouble of finding Hermes Boots. The aforementioned Tsunami in a Bottle is slightly better than the regular Cloud in a Bottle, and there's even a guaranteed mount after five fishing quests (the rabbit, which makes you immune to fall damage when ridden).

The craftes have a random chance of granting ores or bars. If opened in hardmode, they may grant hardmode metals, so hoarding them beforehand then opening them en mass after beating the WoF can give you a bit of a boost.

If you want any hope of getting all achievements, start fishing ASAP. You can only perform one quest per in-game day, so the sooner you start, the more feasible it is.

The grate potion is great! I find that (early)hardmode fishing is safer than mining and you get ores faster that way. Not to mention ores that your world doesn't have. So in my opinion it's very worth it.

The sitting duck is very good rod and worth it. Fireflies are easily obtainable for how good they are. And finishing the Anglers quests you get the journeyman bates and Master bates(hehe). Plus there's the bunny mount..

So all in all I love fishing. Fishing related potion are quite easy to make and you get some unique items from it (later in hardmode the items are mainly for selling cause you get decent amount of money from them).

Fishing is absolutely worth it. Keep crates until hardmode and when you reach it, open them all. I had about 70-80 crates when I reached hardmode, got 2/3 titanium armor pieces (luckily my world got titanium ore as well) + adamantite forge + adamantite pickaxe + mythril anvil + a lot of gold from the rest of the bars and ores I didn't need. Not to mention the insane amount of accessories.
I find that fishing is very worth it. With enough crate potions and a good rod, I don't have to go mining for rare materials except Chlorophyte (which I don't really have to do since I have an effictient Chlorophyte farm). The world I am currently in as Palladium, Mythril, and Titanium as its blessed ores. I wear a full Adamantine armor set made from all the adamantine bars (nor ores) I've gather through fishing up crates. Not only that, but I've obtain a Bottomless Water Bucket, making the Underworld lava lakes one less thing on my list of dangers.

Just keep fishing and the awards keep getting better.

Fishing is OP, if you have at least a bit of patience. First of all, you get ingredients for very useful potions(like +10% damage and crit). Second, you get Reaver Shark(you can skip all but last pre-hardmode boss with it, since it can mine everything). Third, you can avoid blessing your world and dealing with extra corruption/hallow by accumulating enough crates before hardmode and opening them once it starts, instantly getting adamantite/titanium gear. Fourth, you can get Seedler as soon as hardmode starts. Normally this sword drops from Plantera, but getting it in the beginning means easy mode through first five hardmode bosses, not to mention cheesing everything else.

The later in the game you get, the less useful fishing rewards are. If you go fishing BEFORE Skeletron, there's a ton of super good stuff, if you're lucky or persistent enough to get it. There's also a few things in early hardmode, but most of the rewards/loot is completely useless by the time you reach Plantera (like the rockfish or hardmode ores)

Also if you want to craft the Cell Phone, it REQUIRES several angler-exclusive accessories, and many potions require specific fish.

Per world and per character...

A single character with a single world will take a long time to get the 200 Fishing "Quest" achievement. 5+ characters with access to multiple worlds with a ready Angler (and easy access to apropriate biomes) will make it go by a lot faster.

Are you seriously going to save and quit a hundred times just because you're super impatient for an achievement that's only existed for a week?

I got 50 quests done and:

1. I only used one character
2. I didn't do every quest every day
3. I still haven't beaten the moon lord yet
4. I've only used my enchanted sundial like twice.

It's good to start fishing early to make the most use of it and it's items. Plus it wont feel like a chore if you start early. If you wait until later pre hard then you run out of things to do while waiting for the next day. But if you been doing it early then you have plenty to do after turning in quest and waiting until the next quest is given.

For a pole the crimson/corruption one is good to make fairly early if you bomb some ore, you don't need the scales/tissue to make the pole. For bait you can get a lot by making a small jungle biome relativly close to base which you will do anyway for the witchdoctor house (line the top of roof with mud too and jungle seeds), the grass and bushes of that small biome grow fast so you will have lots of grubbys and snails to catch and use.

Like already said save at least the wooden crates for hard after you break 3 alters. All those crates can give you a pretty big head start with the new ores. It's great being able to start with one of the picks after cobalt and maybe both the new anvil and forge.
oh yeah about the rods, here's the ones I think you should get, in order (not always an option mind you)

1. Fisher of Souls / Fleshcatcher
2. Mechanical Rod (hardmode only)
3. Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole (you can skip the last two if you luck out)
4. Golden Fishing Rod
5. Hotline Fishing Hook (golden is better but can't fish in lava)

The rest of the rods are completely pointless.

As for bait, until you get enough quests/crates to get Journeyman or better, fireflies and worms are fairly easy to amass. You might want to use fishing potions too until you get a better rod, and there's the angler earring, but with the limited accessory slots I prefer the high test fishing line. The tackle box isn't really that useful imo.

Anything with less than 20% fishing power is garbage. Grubby is only 15%, snail is 10%. It's way easy to get sluggy or better.

Simple answer is YES.
Specular fishes can be made into wormhole potions that allows you to teleport to a friend.
Ebonkoi makes a potion that increases all damage by 10%
Hemorroid increases crit damage by 10%
And so on, they are pretty essential for expert mode.
