Maybe you could provide us with a screenshot of your map so that we can tell whether you're doing everything correctly or not. Do you mean to tell me you don't have any natural caves on the surface of your world?

The dungeon is something completely different to the caves you find. So's the Cavern layer. If you keep digging straight down, eventually you WILL come across Cavern. However, you may want to dig a bit around the surface and underground layers, first. Easier monsters, etc. The Dungeon will be found to the far East or West of your map. If you run in one direction and find snow, that's the right way. If you find jungle, turn around and explore the other side of your map. Dungeons are HARD, and not suggested for people with wooden armor.

The best way to find the "dungeon" is to go east or west above ground. The best way to find open caverns underground is do dig downward. Go all the way until you see orange-colored wall background or lava. At that point, you'll know you have gone down pretty deep. Anything else above that, will be where you can find more caverns and open but dark spaces to explore.

Quick interjection here, can I ever reach the bottom? Like bedrock in minecraft? Also, I found an area I was digging deep down. It's got a blue glow and blue floor with skeletons roaming about. Anything special there?

There is a bottom, it's in the Hell layer. There isn't a bedrock layer or anything, the map just ends, usually with large lava pools. As for the blue with skeletons, that's either your World's dungeon or a Mushroom biome. If it is the dungeon, you will be killed by a Dungeon Guardian unless you have defeated Skeleton first

You never answered my question. Do you have any natural caves on the surface at all? Because, if you do, then you should be able to go down those and link up to other caverns that are closed in.
