Just keep on fighting. If you aren't too far into the world, it may be best to create a new world (Characters can go to multiple worlds)
According to the Wiki, you're getting the invasion because you either summoned it, or reached the qualifications for it to occur naturally. These being that you have 200+ health, smashed at least 1 Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart, and haven't had an invasion within 7 days.
If relogging to the world doesn't work, simply do your best to kill the goblins. Most are stopped with doors, and can be picked off with ranged weapons in towers. The sorcerers and peons will be a challenge, since they either open/break doors or ignore them altogether. The event will end when the last goblin dies, unless you get it to end otherwise.
Although, once the invasion IS finished, you may want to focus on getting better gear.
New world time I guess. Guess that was a waste of 8 hours. Hell, Dark Souls was easier than this. At least I never got into a position where I couldn't get out of.
I wouldn't call it a waste. Try generating a world that has Corruption if you had Crimson, or Crimson if you had Corruption. That way you'll get a new experience, new items. You may even luck out and get all alternate ores to your first world.
You might try getting a friend to come into your world and help you out, though.
After that, hopefully some time passes between now and the next goblin army fight, and you will be better/stronger. Or more prepared. I like to use lava traps to help me fight the goblin army. With the active and inactive stone, then I can turn on the trap when they come and turn it off when done so I can walk on the ground normally.
Another way is that you can use the goblin mines/bombs that they drop against them. Pick them up and toss them and let some goblins die in the fray.
Another way is to use your respawn to destroy your bed, and you may respawn further away from the heat of battle. That will give you a chance to recover HP.
And yet another way -- don't go home for a while. They'll still be there but you can be elsewhere until you get geared up properly. For example, you could get iron armor. It's not uncommon to have 2 or 3 or more homes/fortresses spread throughout the world map, all set up with different supplies.
You can even get the NPCs to move to your new place (after making the appropriate rooms) by removing furniture or doors where they currently are. Do all this in the heat of battle.
Also, you may find that making another world is just as fun, now that you know more and can gather faster, so don't delete the first world yet. You'll come back to it one day. The 8 hours you spent there is not a loss yet.
So it's not quite an unfixable problem.
