This should be obvious.
But the plain brown ones, and most of the other ones, you just open by right clicking. The game's set up with mostly left click or right click interactions.
First, there are Gold chests that spawn in the Dungeon that require a Gold key to open. This key can drop from monsters in the Dungeon itself, or found in regular brown chests in the Dungeon.
What you may also come across in the Dungeon is a special themed chest. When in hardmode, key molds can drop from mobs of a specific biome (Underground Jungle yields Jungle Key Mold, Crimson yields Crimson Key Mold, etc). And you use that mold along with other items to craft a key that can open that chest. These are generally late game.
The third kind of locked chest is a Shadow Chest in the Underworld. These require a Shadow Key which comes out of a Gold Chest in the Dungeon.
If you are, however, talking about normal chests, then you just right click. I really hope you aren't talking about these.
