Pumpkin seeds require forest-grass covered dirt.
Shiverthorn requires snow.
Waterleaf requires sand.
Most all of these can also be planted in clay pots, as well. And each only blooms (giving back seeds to replace the ones you planted) under certain conditions. To plant, is to use like any other item. Hold the seed in your hand and left click where to plant.
You can now. In earlier versions of the game you couldn't, but the game developers fixed that.
Someone needs to update. Planting an acorn on corrupt grass grows a corrupt tree and yields Ebonwood. Likewise, planting an acorn on ebonsand will produce a palm tree that yields ebonwood.
Crimson grass produces trees to farm shadewood, Hallowed yields pearlwood, and regular sand makes palm wood. Snow makes Boreal wood. Rich Mahogany doesn't require acorns, you just plant a row of Jungle Grass and keep it free from undergrowth. Flooding the area can prevent this, allowing just the trees to grow.
