Very odd glitch involving wearing developer's armor... (It works?)

I found something very weird today... I was messing around with a friend in Terraria, and I wanted to prank him. So, as a joke, I gave him Crowno's Mask and said that it would look cool on him. I don't usually hack items in, but I suspected that he hacked much of his items in the game. This is because he only has a couple of hours on-record, but somehow he has a full set of Turtle Armor (and he isn't even in hardmode on his world). So, I got Crowno's Mask through "Terraria Inventory Edit" by Shoot, and gave it to him and told him to wear it in his social slot. Yet, when he equipped it (and I saw it on his character), no debuffs occured! He wasn't burning, he could see perfectly, and could walk around without a problem. Obviously, I tried it on, and I was almost decimated by the debuffs... I left the server and got many developer's armors, and even Red's stuff worked. I'm sure my friend couldn't have altered the game in any way (he's 12 and needs me to upgrade his other games) and he assures me that his Terraria is not-cracked. Can someone explain why this is happening? If this is a serious problem, I hope Redigit can fix it before it happens to other people. I'd appreciate it.

probably has a patch that prevents the debuffs because they do have that now lol

I acknowledge that it was hacking, and I apologize. But if it was a new patch, why would it work on my friend, yet not I?

I don't go on multiplayer servers anyway, I only play Terraria with my friends.

there is a mod patch that does that and prevents the debuff as if red etc himself wore it

Okay... but I doubt that my friend would use any form of mod. Like I said before, he's only 12, and he has trouble moving downloads to his desktop. But thanks, anyway, I didn't know there were mods for that.

I guess it's possible, but it took a while for him to learn how to install Minecraft mods, and he still needs my help. But he could've used the aid of a Youtube video or something.

I heard Crowno's mask is the only dev item that doesn't give debuffs.

There is a modified client called Infinest that can render all debuffs useless.

I read the wiki a bit, it says that if your name isn't Red (the actual dev name) then the debuff is applied to you.

I always wondered if you would get the debuff if you just created a char named Red (or whatever the name is)

I'll probably check my friend's computer for any Terraria mods; I just didn't think that he'd be capable of downloading them. Yet he has been getting a lot of items through "some friend" (aka another program that I didn't help him install) so he could have a mod. So I'll check on that, then.

I beilive this is happening because you told him to equip it in the Social slot. in the Social slot it shouldn't do anything.
