Worth what? I don't see any downside. If you have no better light pet it is one of the most useful things to carry around until you have.

Ok, wait. did you mean the Item "crimson heart" or the sprites spawning on the map?

Smashing the natural ones will drop items, smashing 3 will summon a boss that drops material you will need for a pickaxe.

The crimson heart Item is a Pet emitting light.
It has an extra slot bersides the normal pet slot to carry one around.
Right clicking the item will put it in the correct slot, to access your extra slots normally click the chain icon above your accessories.

The crimson heart item is randomly dropped by the natural crimson heart sprite.

edit: ok, obviously you ment the sprite. Yes, it's worth doing it, you need to kill the boss for progression (there is a way around, but that`s not the intended way).

You probably despawned it then.

What does it matter? As long as you keep your money in your Piggy Bank or whatever, there's no penalty for dying (unless you were crazy and chose an option other than Softcore).

Each 3 Crimson heart you break summons the brain. Destroying a crimson heart rewards you with a random item. Mostly a gun,then also a spear, spell and a light pet.

well, i recently broke all 6 crimson hearts in my crimson biome, and i only got...
-frenzying undertaker
-undertaker x2
-crimson heart x2
-rotted fork
but; the rewards from the brain of cthulu are worth it.

There's also a chance of a meteorite spawning on the next morning in-game after you've destroyed a Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart.
It lands somewhere in your world, and is ready to be mined to make new shiny things, like a lightsaber.

50% chance each time you break one. If you rapidly break more then one you will not get more then a 50% for one meteor to appear. The best thing to do is break one and then wait till midnight. Also they stop falling after there is a cretain amount of meteorire ore in the world unmined. ALso to mine the ore you need a strong pickaxe or bombs. If you are having issues just use a bunch of bombs.

You can use bombs? I thought those didn't work (like they don't on hellstone)

Anyway, it is usefull for newer players as it can give the weapons such as the gun you get the undertaker which is slightly better than a wooden bow + Sarcasm, dont get angry.

Meteorites spawn randomly while breaking hearts, so break a whole bunch and just walk until you hit the ocean.

Bring health potions and supplies for emergency housing, having movement accessories makes this 100x easier.

For me they usually spawn on top or around the jungle or dungeon.
