It's only 5 bars now.

Also, you might very well have an altar somewhere other than your corrupt areas. I often have one near my starting point not too far down underground, and I've even seen them in the Ocean.

But yes... make Slime Crown, use Slime Crown. It's that simple.

Damn right, endgame gear. I got the full Ninja set that time, all 3 pieces in 3 kills.

...and then upgrade to Fossil 20 minutes later. Because those throwing sets are placed in such strategic points throughout progression.

There is also a second way to face the Slime King and that is through his event, Slime Rain. In order to get this event to trigger, you need to have more than 140 life and 8 defense on at least one player in the world. When this is triggered, you will have a 4.9% chance to have a Slime Rain event occur each day. If you have yet to kill the Slime King, the chance of this event occuring is doubled to 9.8% pre-hardmode. In hardmode, the chance drops to 3.3% and 6.6%, depending on if you killed him or not. Also, this event can occur either during the day or at night, with a seperate chance rolled in the morning and evening. So, be prepared. Also, it can occur at the same time as a Blood Moon, making things even harder. I've even seen people fighting the King Slime during a Blood Moon and then the Eye of Cthulhu opted to show up. It... did not end well.

Once the event spawns, you need to then kill 150 slimes if you haven't killed the Slime King yet (Only 75 slimes need to be killed if you have killed him, however). After killing the required number of slimes, the King Slime will spawn near you and attack.

Yes, but only on the far left or far right thirds of the map and only in a grassy area above 0 depth. And even then, it's only a 1 in 300 chance. It doesn't even work if there's no Forest areas in those two thirds of the map.

TO make it more clear what he means, it's anywhere outside the middle 1/3 of the world in a pure forest biome. They share the same spawn area with goblin scouts. With a water candle and battle potion you have a good chance of one spanwing each day.

Funny story time! I once had King Slime appear right before dusk, and when night started I got the warning about EoC showing up soon. I was not intending to fight either boss, and was in the middle of explore the world. Luckly I had a full set of Metoer armour and a Space Gun so it wasn't very hard to win at the unexpected boss attacks.
