I played quite a bit of this game with my friends and we just grabbed one weapon per type and killed everything, we had no class.
Can't you use your summoning weapons with a strong melee armor?
Or is it just a matter of roleplay and immersion?
Later in the game (starting at hardmode), you have to pick a "class", because accessories and armor sets only give bonuses to these classes. You can still use a bow with a melee armor, but you'll loose efficiency.
That, and as you said, roleplay. I just don't like using summons on a warrior, even though it's basically free dps. Anyway, without a summon-oriented armor, I'd only have one summon at a time, with subpar damage compared to any melee weapon.

Now, OP, I'd recommend a youtube summoner playthrough, so you can see how it can work out. Check out the "Hagrid" playthrough by Yrimir (the best terraria youtuber out there if you ask me), in which he only uses summons and crimson/nimbus rod with a hardcore character.
Celestial shell: best item in the game, use it with every build
anhk shield: warding gives you 8 def and massive resists, hard to pass up
papyrus scarab: massive damage boost and an extra minion, must have
master ninja gear: the evasion lasts a very long time and completely blocks damage
frozen turtle shell: %25 reduction under %50 life. Basically increases your life from 500 > 562.
As you can see 4 of our equips are boosting our survivability and only one for damage. When you have 7 stardust cells and 1 stardust dragon out(or better), you can let them deal all the damage while you focus on not taking damage. When you get a chance to attack throw out some of your best magic or something, you won't do much damage with anything because you don't have bonuses.
You really use Frozen Turtle Shell over Summoner Emblem?
I would think that dealing over 15% more damage with minions (thus killing threats sooner) would lead to much more damage prevention in the long run... especially since the Shell threshold can be bypassed (you go from 51% to 30% HP, and only then does the reduction start applying).
Yea with the entire set at warding, it puts me at 69 def. I can solo moon lord in about 50 secs and 1-3 nurse heals. (depends on ninja evasion luck) You can do a great deal of damage with vortex beater and a pumpkin pie without any kind of gear for it. You could do well with a destroyer/avenger/ect emblem sure, but the frozen shell has saved me more thana few times.
helps dodging a ton and has many other uses
