This happend to my friends twice and both times while in expert mode and far into the game. The way that they got their world back was by going into the folder where the worlds are located and moved them to another location (as a backup, they moved it to the desktop). They then deleted the worlds from that folder then went into TEdit and loaded the world (the one they moved to another location and not the .bak). If it loaded and you can see your world on the main screen in TEdit that is a good sign. Now you should be able to save that world back into the world folder for Terraria and it should work, well it did for my friends.
I hope that they patch whatever causes this issue (also the steam cloud crash issue) soon.
I hope that helps and is not confusing lol.
Another thing you can try, if you have not done so already and if you have a .bak or the orginal, is to manually remove the .bak from the backup then load that one rather than the game doing it for you (since I read that you were given an option to load a backup).
If for some reason you don't have backups check your trash as I also read that they were getting deleted.
"(the other backup was deleted)"
Also, the Restore previous versions does normally work, but since my computer's clock is broken it does not automatically make backups. I appreciate your help though.
"System.IO.FileFormatException: Unexpected Position: Invalid File Format Section"
and the class and method of the error.
So there is still a chance I could save my world, just have to find out why it isn't working.
