its not fast enough
It's fast enough to beat Expert Fishron, at least. And that was with me messing up and losing the UFO a couple times when touching the water... okay I sure was glad I had my wings equiped at that time. T_T
Oh yeah expert Fishron is a real pain in the ass. Harder than the Moon Lord. That's the only boss that really requires wings I think.

But you could always equip Solar Wings instead of Sorcerer Emblem. It does reduce your dmg but since nearly every other accessory already gives some it's not too bad.

The enrage is solid, I kept screaming and yelling like a moron when it happened, wasn't expecting this at all lol
Use the Duke Fishron mount if you can, he won't go poof in water (he'll actually speed up for awhile, he'll also speed up if you're at 50% hp or less)

I also wouldn't recommend the Ankh Shield for a mage, there's not that many debuffs to be an issue and if knockback is your concern you can just slam your hook into something (though the best way to deal with combat as mage is to just stay back in general)

I wouldn't recommend Mana Flower either due to the mana sickness debuff. Brew up some mana regeneration potions instead, they're more powerful than you might think and will help tremendously. Once you get Nebula Armor, you can spawn in mana buffs which stack with the mana regen potion that will make you ridiculous.

My loadout is Sorcerer Emblem, Destroyer Emblem, Celestial Emblem, and Avenger Emblem for damage, plus the Worm Scarf & Celestial Stone for defense and just generally buffing things all around. I have Lucky on two of my accessories for more crit chance, and menacing on everything else. I can nuke things pretty good.

If you're not on Expert Mode, disregard the Worm Scarf.

This is what I recommend too, but UFO is a good alternative until you get it. Farming Fishron ain't too fun.

True thing about debuffs, but I think knockback is a serious issue and can sometimes really surprise you. Staying hooked to one place can get you killed very fast.

Mana Flower also reduces mana costs and when used with Nebula armor it doesn't really make you drink potions except againt really tough enemies and bosses. Mana regen potions are great too, of course, but I personally ALWAYS forget to drink them so I prefer this setup. -__-

The Rod of Discord (rare drop from Chaos Elementals in Underground Hallow) is a great tool for a mage as well, perfect for a quick escape when deep underground as an alternative to hook-slamming.

I mostly only boss-fight these days so I never really have an issue with knockback, but I'd recommend farming one of those if you can. I was addicted to that item back in 1.2 when it first came out before they threw the damage-curse on it to prevent people from spamming :v

This build considers all available items up to and including moon lord drops. I have found that the 3 best DPS weapons for magic are Mystic Last Prism, Masterful Lunar Flare, and Mythical Laser Machinegun, in that order. (Mythical is best for the lunar flare, but masterful reduces mana usage more, and the last prism cannot be mythical because it has no knockback.) For sheer sustainability, you want a mana flower, nature's gift, band of starpower, celestial cuffs, and magic cuffs all arcane. however, I have found that using your favorite wings, lightning boots, and an ankh shield provide much apreciated mobility and protection. (If you are willing to always use it, the UFO mount can substitute your wings and boots) As for the other 2-3 slots, depending on the world difficulty, I recommend the celestial cuffs, the celestial stone, and celestial emblem in that order. The celestial stone is easy to overlook, but its "slight" increases to all stats are fairly significant and include a 10% boost to all damage. Obviously you will want nebula armor or at least spectre armor wih mask, and for maximum use time on the prism you will want all arcane modifiers. this makes your total mana somewhere just shy of 400, your DPS on a single target roughly 10000 with prism, (This is based on normal Moon Lord core timing, needs better testing)\ and still maintains the mobility necessary to function when not in battle mode. It should be noted that your damage will suffer, but your teamates will love you if you decide to use the spectre armor with hood in tandem with the last prism (Except Moon Lord Fight)

Hope this helps!
Celestial Stone can be upgraded to celestial shell now, and fishron is a lot easier as a murfolk. I prefer to switch accesories depending on the situation myself.

The Last Prism doesn't work properly with Spectre armor.
Don't go crits and mana. For expert you're probably going to want armor, especially because expert mode artificially inflates armor but not crit chance. Players are also uncrittable. Mage weapons do plenty of damage anyways, and dead mages do NO damage. Mana regeneration becomes more important than mana in optimized mage builds, because we want to avoid the 25% magic damage reduction of mana sickness from potions.

Full Nebula Armor. Assuming expert, our accessory loadout would be:

-Warding Celestial Cuffs
-Warding Celestial Shell (the base stats are *amazing*)
-Warding Obsidian Ankh (you might get away with swapping this if you're using the UFO)
-Warding Worm Scarf
-Warding Wings
-Warding Frostspark Boots

UFO is a great mount. If you are flying with the UFO during a boss fight, you could swap out the wings and the boots for a Warding Celestial Emblem and a Warding Sorcerer Emblem and get an additional 30% damage.

Your best weapons would be:
Mystic Last Prism
Mythical Lunar Flare
Mythical Nebula Arcanum (for generating buffs with the Nebula Armor)
Mystic Nebula Blaze
Mythical Stardust Dragon Staff
Mythical Rainbow Crystal Staff
Mythical Lunar Portal Staff

Cast your Stardust Dragon, drop all your sentry summons, throw a few Nebula Arcanum to rack up buffs on the Nebula Armor, then start spamming Last Prism and Lunar Flares while laughing maniacally. Everything ever is dead.

Couldn't you have at least made that one clever?
Armor: Nebula. Just Nebula.
Weapon: Last Prism for invasions, Razorpine for single enemies.
Accessories: Mana Flower and a lot of mana potions, lol I forgot all other mage accessories.
Magic power potion for more DPS.

But looking at this, use this instead of mine. Great job of explaining the class dude!

Damage is better than crits because critical dmg is calculated after armor mitigation.

This is what I'm using and I'm sure it's the best mage setup because I've spent hours testing gear while pillar farming:

Armor:
Nebula armor

Weapon:
the Last Prism (Mystic)

Accessories(all +4% dmg aka Menacing):
Destroyer Emblem
Celestial Stone
Ankh Shield
Celestial Cuffs
Mana Flower
Sorcerer Emblem (if you're on expert and have 6th accessory slot)

Mount:
UFO (Cosmic Car Key)
If you're on expert you may also consider Fishron (Shrimpy Truffle) which combines really well with Bottomless Water Bucket.
What about the Celestial Shell?
