They're a rare find in Underground Gold chests. They aren't any tips/tricks besides having a spelunker potion and looking through the underground

Yeah, that's the unfortunate part of looking for it.

Yeah, lava charms are more rare than other gold chest finds. I found one in an abandoned house under the dungeon.

Try going along the walls of your dungeon with a spelunker potion and see if you find any chests.

Potions have a slightly larger range and don't require being used up or held. Gold ore is mostly useless once you get demon/crimson gear anyway.

then again potions have a limited usage timer

Spelunker Glowstick has it's faults:

It can only show treasure a short distance, whereas the spelunker potion covers the whole screen.

Unlike the Spelunker potion, all the Spelunker Glowstick does is make treasure sparkle. it doesn't light up the treasure. For example, you would see sparkles in the floor below you. Is it a pot? Is it a chest? Is it some ore? You'll never know unless you take the time to dig there.

The lava charm is only found rather deep underground. I'm not 100% the area, but it's likely where lava starts to show up. Once you get down that far, start digging tunnels to the east and west looking for chests. A metal dector can pick up chests quite far away, so you might try to get your hands on one.

Have found it higher than lava level. It can appear in any of the gold chests below the surface, rarely.

Following rail tracks is often a good way to get around to a large amount of area

Potions have a usage timer, but its fairly easy to make a stack of them when you go chest hunting. If you gather gold ore and blinkroot along the way you will usually have more materials from gathering than you used up, even if 150 minutes isn't long enough to find what you need.

Once you have a dryad, setting up planters makes the whole thing easier since you can just plant a large amount of stacked plants and harvest a hundred or so at a time. A large amount of expert and late hardmode was designed with potions in mind, so it's a good idea to build the infastructure early. Sand can be created infinitely by using ammo retention effects and a sandgun, herbs are infinite, fish are infinite. Ore is the only thing that isn't (unless you count crates), but by the time you're preparing for Wall of Flesh, you don't have much use for more than iron/lead.

I've been searching for days in a single large world. I have been playing one character to one world solo. Expert. And I have virtually everything else. Including the Arkalis and the cellphone. I've explored maybe 30-40% of the entire cavern layer using spelunkers and the skyfury sword as ground penetrating radar, flying around with honeyed goggles. I've opened dozens of chests.

I have never had such a hard time finding the charm.

Chest items should all be fishable from some crate or other, this is ridiculous. I don't even really need the damn thing anymore.

But that's always the way with this game. Once you unlock the stuff you no longer need it because you already killed what you needed killing to unlock it.

I like that dungeon idea though. At least that would be a break from the monotony of mining from cave bubble to cave bubble.

I went through a whole 1.2.4.1 world without needing it. I then found one in 1.3, and I haven't used it :P

Easiest way you're going to have is if you get gear that does most the work for you. Either get lucky and kill a nymph for a Metal Detector, which tells you when a chest is nearby, or have a friend that can sell you one.

Next find the skeleton merchant somewhere underground... Camp him out until the night of a full moon, when he's selling the Magic Lantern. It provides a dim light and has the same effect as a spelunker glow stick... Only never runs out.

After that, explore until the detector tells you you found a chest. Then use the glows to help narrow your search.

I lucked into a series of underground rail systems and finally found it. Yay for lava waders. Pretty sure it's time for WOF unless I want to roam around till I get the mining pants :)
