Then put up water candle and drink battle potion. All you have to do is let your minions deal with incoming mobs (or guns brazing if that is your style). Check both sides every now and then to see loots. I got 2~3 metal detector this way.
I realize this doesn't help you now, but for future reference you can stop much faster by dismounting from the cart with R, or by hooking the track with E (this one is instant).
At he same time however there are a lot more mobs that are added to the list. However I don't think it really matters as I was able to find them easily enough in both modes (funny story, but I found two of them, one after the other, at the EXACT SAME spot while randomly wandering).
If you try the open space like I said you should find them in short order. As an added side bouns you might find the undead trader guy (annoyingly he stops all spawns until he despawns).
Well one option is just to have a bunch of minions. They will attack anything in range on thier own. I used spiders on my last run and they worked out fine (I have a Soul of Light farming area where I keep finding lost girls).
Traps are not really an option until you can get into the temple. If you can, setup spiked ball traps on the floor. If placed with two blocks below them they force the balls to go upwards, thus covering the floor with spiked balls.
One bucket of lava well leave a shallow enough pool of it's spread over something like 8 or 9 blocks. Build a number of trenchs that length along the floor (leave a block between them so enemies will spawn).
Another tip is that spawns are purely based on what you can see. Setting the game to 800x600 will have stuff spawning much nearer to you compared to using a super high res setting. So in other words you don't have to dig as big an area to farm in.
