am i doing the angler quests wrong?
i have never completed a single angler quest.

i read the quest and go to the correct biome and height and i fish there for a while but i just end up with old shoes , tin cans , seaweed , and bass.

sometimes it requires a certain fishing power, and well...

Fishing is never something thats done very fast...right?

To rasie your fishing power use a better rod (the Traveling Merchant sells the best rod you can get outside of the quest rewards followed by one sold by the Mechainc a few days a week) and/or bait. Also you need to fish from a large enough pool. Once it gets big enough you will never catch trash.

There.. that explains about fishing.

I suggest going to the jungle and breaking the bushes there to get tons of bait. Find a big enough pool and you'll start catching stuff eventually. Just keep at it.
Edit: Don't forget to bring a bug net lmao

Bigger pools = more fishing power (less trash)
Stronger bait = more chance of quest fish
Better rod = better chance (You BETTER NOT be using the wooden pole. Use the crimson or corruption one for early on!

Remember that underground, it's pretty easy to create a large pool - simply drain the various bodies of water into one spot.

The size of the pool is calculated in an odd manner, see here[terraria.gamepedia.com] for details on how to make the most of your water.

Personally I get the impression that the best way to do the quests is to simply fish whenever you feel like fishing. Keep going until you either get bored or run out of bait, but choose a different spot each time. Sooner or later the Angler will ask for something you've already caught and stored away. Edit: Ignore this paragraph - see posts below.

Remember that the items you get from crates are better once you reach hard mode. Crates caught before hard mode will still give hard mode stuff if you wait until then before you open them.

You can make fishing potions and sonar potion, fishing increase power by 15 (makes catching fish = seconds/few minutes long) and sonar potion just tells you what's biting on your line. Pretty nifty for evading those tin cans and bass

All you need is waterleaf and some coral.... you fnd 1-2 waterleaf seed and you can buy growing pots from dryad to make them grow.

It's hella useful ^ ^

Edit: Although my steam achievement towards fishing doesn't go up, I'm finding this weird and... anoying since I have to do 200 quest to get the last (somewhat) hard achievement

Quest fish will only appear when there is a quest for them. They are also coded so you can't catch a second one while you have one on you.

That's not quite how it works. The quest fish will only ever be available if the angler asks for them, not sooner.

From the looks of it that achievement is bugged out on steam's end. The achievement menu ingame tracks the quests appropriately from what I noticed.

Is that so? Makes me glad I haven't done much fishing yet.

If you're going to be fishing at all I'd suggest carrying a bug net around with you. Catch all the worms you can, but don't worry about other bugs.

Why worms? Cause you can make an Enchanted Nightcrawler with a Worm + Fallen Star. These aren't the best bait, but they're quite good, worms and stars are everywhere and you can make them without a crafting station. These should be your go-to bait since better ones aren't readily available.

Don't worry about making your own lakes until you get the Bottomless Water Bucket. If you really can't find any big lakes, drain a smaller one into a larger one to make it bigger. Or if you are determined you can use pumps to duplicate water and fill a large pool once you have access to wiring.

Eventually you'll get all the fishing gear you could want, and you can store it in your social slots for easy access if you want to fish a lot (and if you don't mind running around looking like a hillbilly).
