Crafting while viewing treasure chests mechanics

So sometimes, it's possible for me to create items within the treasure chest while viewing the items contained within, such as turning ores into bars. Other times, I cannot.

How does this work exactly? I have a treasure chest with potion materials right next to a bottle'd workbench, but no luck.

If you opened a chest with materials to craft and you are standing next to craft station it will work; if you stand next to craft station and a chest (but you are not looking in it) it won't work.

I can remove the contents from the chest, exit the treasure chest, THEN create the potions, but not while viewing the contents of the box.
