If you've broken altars however, you should consider yourself working against the clock in terms of saving your world from hollow/corruption. While Hollow is generally the less destructive, both can make mining more difficult until you get better equipment. Corruption can however slowly take over large portions of the jungle giving you less chance of the ore used for most of the mid-tier equipment in hardmode.
Ice and forest biomes are the easiest when starting hardmode... With ice having a number of significant upgrades. You should also probably mine out most of the ice biome since this can quickly be claimed by either corruption or hollow. Desert has a few more useful components (including fossils) but is significantly more difficult due to the new mobs added in the recent patch that don't have any real meaningful drops. As you mine these areas, save any slush, silt, or fossils you come across since this can give you a good amount of ore, including ore types that don't generate in your world.
