Is this game fun solo? Or is it meant for multiplayer?
Is the multiplayer is drop in and out with your singleplayer character or do you have save progress with all players in the game and can only continue the game when all players are present?

The game's fun both solo and multiplayer. And it is drop-in drop-out however you like with multiplayer, no restrictions at all. Its like playing TF2, kind of.
You can drop in and out and you don't need everyone to progress but it's probably more fun that way.

Characters work not by world, but by character selection. So basically, any character works on any server or world with saved progress. And no, not all players need to be present, only the host for the world ot be up. All progress character-wise is saved upon quitting a map or server and the server map is saved when the server owner closes it correctly.

I personally have more fun solo than multiplayer. Unless you really know who your playing with, so many things can go wrong(Other players sabatoging you to die to take your stuff, other players progressing far beyond you in terms of equipment, etc.)

I say if your doing multiplayer, do it with people you can trust who would be willing to share, give advice, etc.

Otherwise go singleplayer.

Actually I am having trouble with singleplayer.

I survived the first night by digging underground.

I built a furnace and workbench but now have no idea where to go from there.

Everything can be achieved by playing solo. That said it is theoritically easier when you have a teammate.

With the new nerfs and debuffs towards the end of the game, solo becomes near impossible during the Duke Fishron / Lunar Events stage, unless you build one of those crazy arenas.
