My crimson key wont open the crimson chest!

So I just got into a harmode world and killed wof. I so happened to get the crimson key not crimson key mold. I went to the dungeon and tried to open the chest but it wouldnt open. Does anyone know why?

I haven't gotten one yet but could you be describing the key the spawns a mimic? You put it in and empty chest and run away before you die.

You have to kill Plantera first, before opening those epic chests. To make her appear, you have to kill one of the hardmode bosses first.

I don't know if 1.3 changed this but as of 1.2.4 you have to kill all 3 of them to be able to fight plantera
