How to activate the Steam overlay?

I want to talk to friends while in game. I have "enable steam overlay" enabled in properties. Wat do?

Press Shift + Tab In Game , If That Didn't Work Try Going Into A World.

Neither of those worked, whenever I press shift + tab it just opens the map. :(

Sometimes the overlay doesn't work when in Terraria. Not sure why. Also, it might be disabled in the game's settings. Right click Terraria and goto Properties. It should be in there somewhere.

I can't activate the overlay as well and can't connect to multiplayer games that my friends are hosting.

In your case it's strange because normally you have to press 'm' to display the map in game. Maybe go in your settings and change the control for activating the map? Maybe that is what is keeping the steam overlay from activating.

Make sure that Terraria is not running in combatibility mode, you can check by going to Task Manager then right clicking Terraria and choosing properties. You will find it in the compatibility tab.

Open steam, right click terraria>manage>brouse local files. this'll open up your files application. Scroll down to the file titled "terraria" and right click once again. finally click run as administrator and then yes when it asks for permission.

numbered step by step:
1. open steam
2. right click terraria
3. click manage
4. click browse local files
5. right click "terraria" file
6. click run as administrator.
7. click yes to permisions
8. have fun!!! :D

Further to the previous post: if you edit the Steam launch shortcut, click properties under shortcut, and tick run as administrator - that also takes care of it.
