Firefly Spawn Glitch?

In my most recent expert run, i learned that having crates at the beginning of hardmode is almost neccassary, so in my new run i started to fish and complete quests for the first time since the release of 1.2.4. The question I have is: How the heck did I get 83 fireflies in 1 night!? I was just running back and forth in a flat forest area near my house and there was never a moment where one wasnt on-screen. I this a glitch? (I play linux btw) Im not complaining either way.

spawn rates is just rng. if you got that many flys then they must have had a higher spawn rate then zombies or eyes would have and cause you cleared them they kept spawning. so if you had cleared them faster you might have gotten more on that night.

Near NPC houses to minimise/remove enemy spawns, some days tons of butterflies will spawn, some nights tons of fireflies/lightning bugs spawn - basically the spawn rate is determined at the start of each night for fireflies/each day for butterflies and sometimes this causes them to spawn in swarms. It's perfectly normal and they are one of the ways to get plenty of bait, it's entirely possible to get more than 100 fireflies in one night if the spawn rate if high enough. Quite a lot of worms spawn during rain on the surface as well.

you can take advantage of that spawn rate by using peace candles and making npc towers on either side of the field and just running back and forth. Peace candles lower the spawn rate for monsters.

Lmao, i had the same thing with worms during a rain storm, got about 80~
