"Invalid Operation at this state" when loaded

Okay, so I was about to start hosting so me and my friend could play, then when the world loaded, I heard Hell music, and the screen was completly black except for the hotbar, menu, and the things that appeared for what I had equipped. Then after a few seconds, it says "Invalid operation at this state" with only Cancel as an option to choose, and the normal menu music was playing, but the background was Hell. Any single way to fix this? My Terraria also went crazy when one of my characters was just erased from the files...

this is 2 years old why are you posting here
also i still haven't found a fix other than to just basically quadruple backup your characters and worlds then copy the world and character files and paste them into a new folder to keep them safe
this trick has saved many of my worlds and characters your welcome

like i said man, every time you save and exit make sure to backup that character and world it's super important
