You don't need to start a new char, but you can take the jungle key to a freshly generated world and progress that world. But you need to play through the game's progression. That means killing the wall of flesh to start hardmode, followed by killing the mech bosses to activate the jungle's restlessness. At that point you can open the jungle tample and proceed from there.
The rest of the game is pretty much optional, but you might find some advantages from killing the other bosses. Maybe. Okay, probably not for the point of progression you're at. But on the bright side, at least digging the hole to hell will go faster with your hardmode mining tool.
