If you are using it as an extra damage source, Kinda.
It is crucial that you have extra summons later in the game, and for fighting the tougher early bosses, like WoF and Prime.
Just need to get a little into fishing.
I second this. If you're a dedicated summoner then they'll give you a pretty big edge, but otherwise they're not terribly necessary unless you just need that extra sliver of DPS to beat that boss.
You should be fishing and growing herbs anyway to get other potions like Lifeforce and Endurance, though.
Neither, use guns. Summoners don't have the mana to get full mileage out of magic weapons and guns are stronger than melee weapons when you aren't wearing gear that boosts either.
But I recommend using Ranged as well, as the guy above explains. You need mana incase you're placing summons and such, and Melee makes you take too much damage, and Summoner armor is pretty weak, defense wise.
The advantage of ranged weapons is DPS and piercing vs. non-piercing, not range. When you're playing a summoner you usually want to use weapons that aren't piercing, since enemies can't be damaged by two sources of piercing damage at the same time and most summons are piercing. Most melee weapons are piercing, too (even Daybreak, it just stops dealing direct damage before it can hit more than once), but guns are not piercing unless you use Meteorite or Luminite bullets. I guess you could say the same of bows, but the strongest pre-Moon Lord arrows (Holy) have a piercing side effect and after Moon Lord the SDMG is superior to any bow.
I think Vampire Knives are the only endgame melee weapon that doesn't deal piercing damage, besides the Terrarian (its homing shots are piercing, though), so they work fairly well with a summoner. You'll still want a gun for DPS purposes, though. Also, with a gun, you can use Ichor Bullets and not only deal tons of damage with the gun itself but also strengthen your summons at the same time.
If you're using the Stardust Dragon then a Summoning Potion will help it more than a Wrath Potion, so that's fine.
Also, if you're worried about ammo like you mentioned, then you can just buy four stacks of Musket Balls from the Arms Dealer and make yourself an Endless Musket Pouch at a placed Crystal Ball. It'll be slightly weaker than if you used Ichor or Chlorophyte Bullets, but it's good enough for everything but endgame bosses and it'll still be stronger than any melee weapon.
Oh, and a note: Moon Lord is immune to the Ichor debuff, so if you're planning on fighting him with this setup, use Chlorophyte instead.
i should get her a new house for events
