Try fishing, the crates you get from it will give you the lead, well a chance at getting lead

Maybe your world doesnt have lead at all. Worlds spawn either with iron OR lead , but never with both at the same time. Those two ores are equivalents. So say if you are in an iron only world, your own solution to get lead is to fish in that said world for crates and hope for lead ore. But that method is quite slow, i would just focus on iron ore and move on from that one.
Also all contraptions , items etc you can build with lead you can also build with iron, like mech boss summon items or water pumps or street laterns etc

The far faster method of obtaining lead in an iron-spawned world is to fing an extractionator and mine all the silt/slush/fossil you can find. Extractionating these materials will give you any of the gems in the game, any of the pre-hardmode ores, amber (which can only be obtained by this method), money and occasionally something rare.
