Unknown World (size) and no name bug!
This is pretty much what happens:

I load up Terraria either through the desktop shortcut or through Steam and everything loads up like normal. I select my character and then go to my worlds but the world I've invested all my time into isn't there anymore, in its place is a world with no name and under size it says 'unknown world'. If I select this world it loads up like normal but the screen pops up with my inventory bar in the top left corner while the rest of the screen is black and then immediately crashes, I get the windows popup telling me it's stopped working and that's pretty much the end of the story.

I've noticed that a lot of people have experienced this but so far found no solutions to fix it. To answer the questions I've seen:

No I don't use Steam cloud or manually make back-ups.

I have tried using what I think is the automatic back up file (wld.bak) b removing the '.bak' and deleting the original wld file but the same thing happens regardless.

I have never used any mods.

The game is post-WoF.

If anyone has any idea how to fix this I'd appreciate it as I'm speaking on behalf of my younger sister as it happened to her, I think all these details are correct but unfortunately due to her difficulties with communication I may have missed something. I'm under the impression that the world is gone forever but if there's anything I can do to get it back for her I'll try my hardest and I'm currently in my third week of searching online for an answer so anything you guys can suggest will be appreciated :)

I see That this was posted 2 years ago, but for anyone that comes to this thread with the same bug, I found a fix that works for me.I made a backup and I went to C:\Users\Finn\Documents\My Games\Terraria and then I right clicked on my worlds folder, went to properties and then went to previous versions. after that you must click on a previous backup and go restore, you might lose a bit of progress, but hopefully you dont lose everything.

Hey, it's 2018 now and I STILL GOT THIS FLIPPING BUG. Id want to use your fix but there is no "previous versions" segment in my properties section. Using windows 10.

I learned that in Windows 10 you need a separate harddrive connected for the files to save their previous versions to that. Sadly I have not figured out another fix but am working on it right now

This thread was quite old before the recent posts, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
