But eh, get as many minions as you can, and from there on try to get tempest staff, it doubles as a shield and a summon.
i wonder what exactly a true summoner is. i have no clue about that class, since i never played it, but at my current playthrough i really try to get into summoner!
but what im confused with is what weapons is a summoner really allowed to use ?
like if i only use my summons even in prehardmode with the imp staff they just do 50 dps and aim mostly the wrong targets, so its really hard to fight as summoner in expert mode.
so a summoner can take any secondary weapon they want ? or are they only allowed with weapons , which have "summoning damage" on them ? and if only summoning is allowed how are you really surviving bosses ? currently it feels in prehardmode my summoner got the worst dps of all classes involved and it really seems hard to progress.
but maybe im just noob at summoner and need more tips etc ?
my current loadout is imp staff , bee armor , worm scarf , chuthulhu shield , pinksharkon balloon,
obsidian shield and spectre boots.
currently idk if i should all reforge to menacing or try go tank and do defense reforges ? i noticed only 2x menace reforge improves damage of imps just+1 so it seems really weak ? like shouldnt 8% damage do at least a little more ? D:
u can use crimson/nimbus rod as a side weapon too. fuctions similar to a turrent minion(but only that will not be sufficient for expert but was possible for normal mode but only hand full of ppl could do that)
All classes are merely alternate optimization paths - different ways to achieve optimal effectiveness in combat. Therefore, since there's nothing stopping you from using other weapons as a summoner, you can and should (and you should also use summons with other classes too). As you noticed, summon weapons on their own don't do as much DPS as the other classes do, which is entirely intentional on the devs' parts. Since you don't give anything up to use other weapons along with your summons, summoners are assumed to be using both at all times (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_dominance), so the devs balanced around that assumption. Had the summon weapons been comparable to other weapons on their own, then they'd be completely broken when combined with other weapons.
Basically, you're supposed to be using everything at your disposal with any class; it's just that with other classes there's opportunity cost to using other classes' weapons (except summons), since you can only use one at a time and your armor (presumably) only boosts one damage type.
Of course, if you just want to do the game using only summon weapons, then that's your choice. But there's nothing inherent in the gameplay that enforces it.
Menacing is better in general at endgame, but early-game you may want to patch your defense up a bit. Be aware though that summons keep damage bonuses even when you switch equipment, so you can equip menacing accessories and summon your minions, then switch to warding accessories to give yourself more survivability.
plantera was always my menace even if i was mighty mage or ranger, so i fear as summoner it will be even more hard and crazy.
i noticed that pirates can only fight at solid blocks and got a very small range so i guess they are ruled out
whats left are spiders or the twins. the problem with the twins is they seem to get stuck behind blocks and are rather slow to follow the summoner , who tries to dodge like crazy.
so what do people think ? should i go spider armor with spiders and queen spider to fight plantera ?
and what secondary weapon do people suggest ? plantera is really scary D:
sadly venom bullets are only aviable AFTER plantera :/
also the uzi is terribly rare, what do you think about the bow types ? what about hallow repeater or chlorophyt shotbow ? the arrow shotgun style seems neat :D
edit: also your "strategic dominance wiki= link isnt working , is says error at loading page :/
Oh yeah, I forgot. Well, Ichor is better anyway.
Bows are not a great idea with summons because the best arrow types at that point in the game are piercing (Holy, Chlorophyte, etc.), which means that they'll conflict with Mini-Spazmatism's charge attack. It's much better to stick with guns.
