I can't join public servers?

Hey guys, I need a bit of help here.
So I have been trying to get on servers since a month ago and only bothered myself to take it here now.
I just can't enter the Port for the servers.
I've been told by many and by the googles that the port for all Terraria servers is, in fact, 7777, yet for some reason, I type that in and press enter AND accept but nothing happens at all. It just stays on that screen, telling me to enter the server port.
Any idea why this is happening, and how I can fix it? Thank you guys :)

In some cases, it may not be a port issue, as much as some public servers aren't all public anymore. To avoid griefers and people who come in flopping their end-game equipment around, steam has a function that only allows people who are on eachother's friend list to join certain servers.

Because I don't want people bothering me on my friend list all the time, begging for items, or always gushing about trades, I usually don't add people to my friend list. Up until recently, I normally just wandered the public servers as a builder-type character, completly geared to help people construct bases and NPC houses (non-combat character type).

But as public servers have changed due to the new updates (only allowing friends to join certain games), there are less people who actually are running open games, or non PW'ed servers. Thus, less avalibility for joining such worlds or games.

I see what you're saying, but apparently I can't join the most popular server (According to Terraria Server lists) the Pink Panther one. It has over 20 people normally, and I never seem to be able to join. Does that same rule apply to this server?
