depends on the situation u face.use mini shark for speedy foes and musket for burst damage(isnt that accurate). also consider the chance of not consuming ammo on minishark and it can be upgraded to star cannon if u can afford enough stars.
i find minishark more useful for bosses rather than the musket especially skeletron, eye of cthulhu and queen bee

minishark is better for bosses, and musket for zombies,slimes.etc.

Minishark's better for crowd control and continuous damage on bosses as long as your aim is halfway decent. It also upgrades into the Megashark fairly early on into hardmode.

I would suggest using the Minishark until you get a handgun from the dungeon, then reach the underworld and get yourself hellstone bars. Use that to convert the handgun into a Phoenix Blaster. It should be a decent ranged weapon until you're able to upgrade to a Megashark.

the minishark is more vulnerable to armor values than the musket, but if you have a shark-tooth necklace (and/or it's upgraded form) the mini-shark does quite well.

The musket is alright for sniping enemies or if you're aim is really good but it's slow rate of fire definitely hurts it. (and personally I'd use a Boomstick over a Musket).

Minishark can suffer a lot on Master Mode against bosses like Queen Bee who gains extremely high armor when her HP drops below ~15%, causing the Minishark to do minimal damage even with Silver/Tungsten bullets (down to dealing only 1-3 damage per hit). Making a Firey Greatsword for the final stretch would be recommended as it has high base damage and can set Queen Bee on fire for consistent DPS that ignores her defense.

Otherwise the biggest other hurdle for the Minishark pre-hardmode is Skeletron as its hands have 14 defense, which can chip away a decent amount of potential DPS. in Hardmode there are much better alternatives with weapons like the Adamantite/Titanium Repeater before you can make the Megashark, which requires you to defeat the Destroyer first.

EDIT:
What the hell is with people necroposting into ancient threads on this board???

Glad someone actually mentions the Minishark's terrible performance on higher difficulties. Also to answer your question, people are just stupid and don't pay attention to the date.
