"Red Potion"

The other day while I was playing on another server this one player started dropping a bunch of items. One of the items I picked up was called a Red Potion, when I used it it gave me a negative buff and I died. What I was wondering is that if there is any way to properly use it or if there is any value to it at all.

The only value to it is negative, since it doesn't really do anything besides give negative buffs and take inventory slots.
