What is the best pre hardmode mage items?

There aren't really any pre-hardmode accessories that give you increased magic damage. But the best in my opinion is full meteorite armor set and space gun. Waterbolt is good too but the meteorite set makes space gun cost 0 mana.

As BroBarb said, the meteorite armour and space gun can help you majorly, and the waterbolt is amazing pre-hardmode too, remember to give them the best reforgments (Often Mythical.). If however you wish for more defence, there is no damage going with molten armour, when I am a mage I try to max my defence as much as possible.

Jungle armor, demon scythe, and then add to that waterbolt and vilethorn (just for hitting thru walls mainly). With that setup you will feel quite magely.

I would also recomend a flower of fire, and a flamelash, but you need a bit more luck finding those. Took me longer than expected at least.

Jungle armor will increase your mana, and magic crit, you will easily outdamage, just keep an eye on mana.

hellstone armor, phoenix blaster, bee gun and a Starfury whit one or 2 summons made the job of killing WOF pretty easy

I would recommend meteor armor , mana flower , cthulhu shield , obsidian shield , boots , lucky horseshoe

For weapons i use a mix of flamelash , space gun, demon scyth and medusa head
