If you are running an Intel 13th or 14th gen CPU (13xx/14xx) I'd suggest updating your motherboard BIOS due to ongoing Intel issues. You can check CPU version by running "dxdiag" (Win + R and type in dxdiag)
Im not familiar with the technicalities of this sort of thing, so im sorry if this isn't the correct information.
Some generic stuff you can do:
- Update graphic card driver
- Verify the integrity of Terraria if you installed it long ago (https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB)
- Try running without mods if mods are installed
- Change the windows 10 power plan to performance
- Load optimized defaults in BIOS. (Could have a bad overclock configured) Note: Re-enable XMP if it was enabled as defaults will likely disable it.
- Update BIOS (Last resort)
Your OS seems to be fully up to date which is good.
Some advanced stuff:
- Provide motherboard/RAM model and RAM frequency. I'm avoiding posting non steam links so you'll have to google for this one. The windows app "system information" or the program "CPU-Z" can be downloaded to obtain the information.
Your CPU supports RAM frequencies of 1866, 2400, 2667, and 2133 without XMP enabled. If you purchased RAM with the max of 2933MHz then XMP has to be enabled in BIOS. Though, I am not sure if the system would even boot with base clock 2933MHz+ RAM with XMP off, never tried something like that.
Verifying the integrity of the game flies did not work.
however uninstalling and reinstalling the game did work but it also removed all of my steam installed texture packs which is weird.
im still subscribed to texture packs in steam they just dont appear in the texture packs menu in game, however texture packs that are installed not through steam (placed manually the \Documents\My Games\Terraria\ResourcePacks folder) still appear in the menu so the menu itself isn't broken.
I can work around the texture pack issue though. thank you for your help
Now how to test this theory.
Switch Terraria in window mode. Restart your comp. Run Terraria for like a minute (it must be in window mode the entire time - from the start to the exit). Exit it. See the result about lags.
Now my second idea is to reinstall that XNA Framework. It's a framework Terraria uses to work. Check your installed programs and find it there. If it's there - uninstall it. Now install it back. You can find its installer in your Terraria Steam folder, something like that:
...\Steam\steamapps\common\Terraria\xnafx40_redist.msi
Test again.
Also it may be not enough to update your video driver. Better to fully reinstall it. If you have Nvidia Control Panel - before reinstalling the driver completely it may be wise to reset its settings to default. Or may be even to reset its settings to default just for the Terraria itself - there is such option there.
apparently, according to the settings menu, this was the game in windowed mode. when i clicked the option to change to fullscreen literally nothing about the game window was any different and this somehow resolved the issue.
in my copy of terraria the only difference between windowed and fullscreen is lagging every other application when in widowed mode. i am ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ baffled
thank you for solving the issue. could you please elaborate as to your theory regarding the issue because i have no idea how this could have come to be the case.
