Before the jungle temple the best hardmode source of easy cash is pirate farming. Set up a pirate farm in the ocean and you will end up with more maps then you know what to do with and tons of coins. The only down side is all the golden junk they drop, but you can just dump it in a chest or sell it at a nearby NPC for a bit more cash (you need a NPC nearby for them to attack in the ocean and thus be farmable).
For a simple AFK farm build a pit 6 blocks wide and fill it with one bucket of lava. The lava will be just shallow enough not to melt everything. You stand right under the lava and you will garb all the drops. Simple and easy to make, it served me well in getting monay.
make a mob farm i will give you two designs and choose whitch one willl be easier :)
Can you show these designs?
But yeah I forgot about these completely. Whoops.
Or just wait until it rains. I see walking goldfish everywhere sometimes. And if you exit and re-enter, they come back.
EDIT: Actually, it was nerfed, I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please) and still it was left in as part of the game, so it really doesn't bother me, personally.
If it were a glitch like that chest one from a while back, where people just duplicated crazy cash and got plats in seconds, then yeah, obviously that's just game-breaking. Keep in mind people farmed goldfish (legitimately) and made a lot more than I believe I could ever make from my 2 decent-sized Obsidian factories, or at the very least, they AFKd it while I'd have to kinda do a lot of clicking to make all those skulls.
Anyway, here's my "two cents", as the Americans say:
1. Make a huge (screen size, plus a bit bigger for assurances nothing will get trapped off-screen) ungerground farm in a place where there's lots of crimson. Something like this:

Then get your summoning gear, which, in my case, in this picture, was the Tiki Armor with the Hercules Beetle. I now use the Spooky Armor Set with the same Beetle, which gives me good damage and I believe 6 minions. (12 if you use the Twins, even though they are technically counted as one each)
Once you've got a setup like this, you do what I'm doing as I type this: you simply let your minions mop up the enemies while you mine Souls of Night (and keys - I've found 5 or 6 in the last day and a bit, with this method)
This will initially net you a few plats, once you've got, say, 500 souls, as I had earlier today. Once that's done, you'll have around 70-80 Mechanical boss summoning items, provided you have a decent stock of Vertebrae and Iron Bars, as I tend to.
Next step is of course to thrash the chosen boss repeatedly. (I went with the Destroyer) and you'll get, well... according to Wiki, if you choose the Destroyer, you'll get 12 gold coins per boss and then you can sell the Hallowed Bars, the Souls, and whatever else they drop. Ka-ching. $$$
2. Obsidian. Since you're anti-creativity (just kidding, but you know what I mean :P) your best bet, IMHO, is to dig a tunnel straight from the ocean floor to hell, and then mine that Obsidian; granted, I've only done this once, so IDK if that was a fluke; I'd previously struggled to get this done.
On the off-chance that doesn't work, simply go to Hell with 100s of buckets and then flood the ocean from the surface, with lava - job done. Craft the Obsidian into Obsidian Skulls, and you'll make 50+ silver per Skull. I tend to get about 20 gold coins per inventory. With the high-end gear, you'll be flying through Obsidian like nobody's business.
3. Bossing again, but this time for the not-so-OP character, or just someone who's simply in pre-hardmode. Now, personally, I'd go with the Brain, as it's really fast, and those Vertebrae are super easy to get with a setup similar to the image I linked from my Soul/Key farm. Killing the Brain will be insanely quick with high-end pre-hardmode gear, let alone high-end hardmode gear.
Big down-side, much like farming the Mechanical bosses, is that you'll have to wait until night-time, which means earning time gets cut down in half, unless you're on a server and cheat the system by changing the time of day. :P (which I actually disagree with - to each their own)
If you farm the Brain, make sure to sell the items you don't need. I have a friend who has a lot of money because he massacred that boss repeatedly.
4. I love this one, as it's active, and has the chance of you finding cool stuff. Put simply: raid dungeons with new maps. Create a new map, beat Skeletron (which in itself makes money) then raid the dungeon. Open chests, kill things (but don't kill too much as it might not be all that profitable) and keep an eye out for functional statues. (which I'll mention in a moment) Once you've ransacked most of it--don't spend too long searching, as it'll be innefficient--leave, make a new map, and repeat the process. You may wanna take a safe (or Piggy Bank) in-case you get kinda full.
5. Build a statue farm; granted, you won't get filthy rich with just a few statues, but a decent-sized farm with plenty of statues (especially the likes of shark statues, skeleton statues, slime statues, and of course jellyfish statues) linked up to lots of wire and 1-second timers, will make quite a respectable amount, IMO. (or crab-engines, if you care for that) I tend to make anything from 6-10 gold coins per inventory of stuff from all my statues, ... possibly more now that I have found lots more statues.
I prefer to use a statue farm along side other things. My method would be: mine left Obsidian Factory, then the right, then raid the statues, then kill bosses until the factories have naturally regenerated, then continue. For my factories, it takes 7-8 minutes to regenerate naturally. (by naturally, I mean not using buckets, but letting it naturally climb)
There will be other methods, but these are my favorites.
Best of luck and I hope I helped someone.
