How can I get rid of Hallow quickly?
My friends and I play on a server hosted by another friend, and the server is on pretty much 24/7, even when we're not on. We didn't properly make our Hellavators before we went into Hardmode, and didn't bother clearing the Hallow because we didn't realize it would spread so quickly. Before we knew it, quite a bit of our world is now crimson or hallow.

I was wondering if there is any way to clear the Hallow more quickly than using the clementinator? The Hallow has pretty much spread through most of our underground and it's a huge pain to go through everything and clear it, especially if there's a chance of missing one block and having it spread again (not to mention it's super expensive).

Also I was wondering if we need to clear all the crystals as well?

Lastly, what do you recommend as the best way to contain the Hallow and Crimson?

Here's a photo of my map. There are some black areas that I myself haven't explored, but they're full of Hallow as well. http://puu.sh/a9WlH/943a72a72a.png

Thanks!

Sorry, but the Clentaminator is by far the fastest way of clearing corruption/crimson and hallow other than using map editing software.

Also, is that hellevator in the pic really 3 blocks wide? because that's the minimum gap needed to prevent binome spreading.

It's 2. I wasn't aware that it had to be 3 so the majority that I made are 2 (which would the reason why it kept spreading!)

When you smash alters for hardmode ore a random stone block somewhere in your world will go Hallw or Crimson. You should take that into account when you try to make your world pure.

Your best bet is to make a bunch of three block wide tunnels and shafts just far enough apart that the clementinator can cover the area in between. It's going to take you forever to do the whole world, but it's useful to at least keep the area around your base and the jungle pure.

If you're very desperate to get rid of the Hallow, you can use a program to edit the world. Yes, it's very much cheating. However, it is the only method that is faster than the Clentaminator.
If you do want to edit the world, this is the program to do so.

There are two ways of killing off the hallow enough, which is either blowing it up with a load of bombs or mineing the crap out of it for days. If you want to stop the hollow from growing over your land than build a hellevator near it with at length 4 across. This will have to be done on both sides of your world at least 4 times to stop it from either direction. This will indeed stop the hallow, corruption, and crimson from spreading across your land but it won't stop it from going downward. Hopefully this helped good luck clearing it out :)

Can I make 3-4 block wide tunnels horizontally across the map to stop it from going downward? Or does it only work vertically?

It works both vertically as well as horizontaly, although at above 0 altitude vines grow from underneath grassed dirt blocks. These vines can "infect" the above blocks by touching the spreading binomes below, or they can, if already infected, infect blocks they come into contact underneath them...

In this situation I would probably start a new server, transport all the stuff, and prepare. First step would be doing everything in the Crimson/Corruption in World A so you can get rid of it prematurely in World B, that way the Crimson/Corruption won't spread and have a wider range than the Hallow. Second, after you beat Wall of Flesh, have a few people search for the Hallows and Crimson areas and have another team tackle the Mechanical Bosses, that's when the Plantera Bulbs spawn. If the "Infected" areas haven't been found yet then have the boss fighting team search for Plantera's Bulb and kill Plantera, that'll slow down any further spreading of all three by half (Or a quarter). After that then both teams should look for and destroy the Infected tiles, do NOT destroy any alters unless you feel confident that you'll find the newly Infected tiles. Now once you're world is Infection free I would take the next OPTIONAL step to make a Floating Island or two into Hallowed, Crimson, AND Corruption (Make sure it has no way of spreading again.) That way you have a neat floating biome and possible farm.
