Now what age is the character meant to be if it were a human is likely any age from abulthood to old age. The old man appears much like any player created character can for example.
Not in the States it's not. I hear it's a great deal lower in England, Australia, Germany, etc. I'd be jealous, but I hear most recreational alcholic beverages are either awful or more expensive than I'm willing to pay for anyway.

in European countries like Germany, they have different attitudes towards drink..in italy wine is often watered down etc and they treat it as more of a family occasion, cultural & tradition instead of mindless binge drinking
