damage > defensive ?
hey guys,
is defensive worthless ?
i'm using:
- spectre armor
- razorblade typhoon
- razorpine
- fishron wings (4% damage)
- celestial stone (4% damage)
- sorcerer emblem (4% damage)
- avenger emblem (4% damage)
- destroyer emblem (4% damage)

i can do frostmoon/pumpkinmoon easily without dying. i can do all bosses and they die in under 10 seconds. so could someone explain me why people get defensive on their accessoires ?

Personal preference and playstyle. Same reason there's modifiers for mana, crit chance, ammo use, knockback, etc.

because hood is still OP.
it basically makes you immortal with an "insanely fast" magic weapon, while still dealing a good amount of damage.

while trying out magic weapons with the spectre/hood armor, during a frostmoon, i actually had only 2 accessories with the "warding" (+4def) prefix and the rest were +4% damage and i still never dropped below 50% health.

makes sense ^^ but most people use damage or defensive. maybe they should improve those other stats for more variety.

defense/2 = actual damage reduction. I'll take more damage over defense any day.
example:

warding shackle = +2 damage reduction

menacing shackle = +4 actual damage

so menacing>warding.

not counting the defense from the shackle.

The logic behind choosing Defense over Offense is that, with higher defense, I'm gonna take a lot longer to die. Since I don't have Vampire Knives and I use Melee, this is really the best way I have to keep myself from dying against the likes of the Ice Queen and mobs of Elf Archers.

This same logic doesn't seem to apply for the Spectre Armor w/ Hood, however, but when using the Spectre Armor w/ Mask, it works just about as well.

From what I can tell, this means that it boils down to whether or not I have lifesteal. If I do, Offense is the way to go, but since I don't most of the time, Defense is my only good option.

Sure it works for your stuff, with your play-style, but other people find/prefer defence, because either they want to take less damage to save dodging quite as much, or because they just feel safer or more confident in their build with a decent supply of defence. Glad it works for you.

I couldn't possibly disagree with you more, Conga - defence is viable throughout the game; that's why it's there. It might be more viable to go all-out attack, in hardmode, with the right gear, but I'm still sticking by the opinion that defence most definitely is not just good in pre-hardmode. Depends on the player, anyway. Maybe he hasn't got an Ankh Shield yet, or doesn't want one, or doesn't care? Jesus.

Had I seen that first, I'd have not bothered saying the rest. xD

Defense is only good pre-hardmode, Some people just want to do it so they can say "Hey guys! I have more defense than u!" They end up dying because of a lack of dps.

How defense works: Half of your defense is damage reduced, terraria rounds the numbers up.

Also why the ♥♥♥♥ don't you have ankh shield?

i have the ankh shield, but im not using it. why should i ? im not dying so i prefer more damage :)

good point :)
and i also think defensive is more viable for melee instead of range characters. it's easier for us range characters to dodge something. correct me if im wrong ^^

Edit: i forgot that there is hardcore. in hardcore it would be defensive > damage in my opinion. ^^

I go all-out offense with mage and ranger but then I go defensive with melee.
