2. Its a game. From the way the game is designed it makes sense to not be able to swim until you have an item that allows you to do so. I guess this is also a lesson to you to never just assume that you can swim in a game since in many games, you cant.
Lucky me, I found out that the PC drops like a rock when in water while on the surface.
Anyway, it isn't inconceivable that the PC might not know how to swim. After all, you live in a world where Teleporters can be placed in a mud hut, or where you can wire such teleporters to digital timers, but God forbid your bed has a frame made of Silver or freakin' Iron. There's a lot that you just have to dismiss or else you're just going to have a horrible time.
Also, Climbing Claws and Shoe Spikes (Or the Tiger Climbing Gear they can be crafted into) really help with navigation, above or below ground or water.
Suspend a little disbelief. A horseshoe also prevents you from dying when leaping off a cliff.
And don't forget your grappling hook ;-)
Yes it is.
But i guess OP is in his very first playthrough, let him discover by himself all the remaining things he could find in the game.
